Heart Conditions We Treat
We can diagnose and treat most heart conditions. The problems we see most often are:
- Coronary artery disease
- Valvular heart disease
- Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias)
- Congestive heart failure
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries that carry blood from your heart to your lungs)
- Lipid disorders, including high cholesterol and elevated lipoprotein (a)
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Venous disease, including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (when veins are damaged, causing blood to pool in your legs)
Diagnosis
There are several reasons to seek out a heart doctor. You may come for a baseline evaluation of your heart health. Or you might want help with specific symptoms. Either way, the first step is an accurate diagnosis.
We can do most imaging tests at our Mount Sinai-Union Square location. This makes it easier and faster to get the right diagnosis. We perform many types of imaging tests. They include:
- Echocardiography: Ultrasound imaging that shows the size, structure, function, and valves of the heart
- Exercise and pharmacologic stress testing: Test that lets us see how well your heart works during stress from exercise or medicine
- Nuclear cardiology imaging: Imaging test that looks at blood flow to the heart muscle and overall heart function
- Carotid ultrasound: Imaging test that shows the carotid arteries and any plaque that could increase your risk of stroke
- Upper and lower extremity arterial and venous ultrasound: Imaging test that looks at blood flow through the arteries and veins of the arms and legs
- Abdominal aortic and iliac ultrasound: Test that shows blood flow through the major arteries of the abdomen and pelvis
- Renal artery ultrasound: Test that displays blood flow to the kidneys
Specialized Treatments and Services
We have several centers and clinics that offer special care. These include:
- Anticoagulation Center: If you take blood thinners for an irregular heartbeat (called arrhythmia) or blood clots, we can monitor you. We can adjust your medication if needed.
- Implantable Cardiac Device Clinic: If you have a pacemaker or cardioverter-defibrillator, we make sure it works properly. We make adjustments when needed.
- Lipid Management: We focus on lipid disorders. The most common is high cholesterol. We treat it with pills and shots in our office every six months.
- Women's Heart Health: Women’s heart problems sometimes look different than men’s. Our doctors can diagnose and treat women's heart problems.
- Weight Management: We can help you manage your weight for better heart health.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea Evaluation: We check for sleep apnea and treat it as part of your heart care.
- Preoperative Cardiovascular Evaluation: If you need surgery, we work with your doctors to help you get ready.
- Center for Vein and Vascular Care: We evaluate and treat problems affecting the blood vessels in your arms and legs. Conditions include:
- Varicose veins
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Vein compression syndrome
- Leg swelling
- Skin ulcers
- Spider veins
Most of our patients do not spend a night in the hospital. When possible, we use treatments that are less invasive and need only small incisions (openings in the body). These include:
- Radiofrequency ablation
- Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy
- Cosmetic sclerotherapy
- Ambulatory phlebectomy
