Learning in Virtual Environments Summer Program
The Learning in Virtual Environments (LIVE) Summer Program is a ten-week paid research experience for undergraduate nursing students from accredited institutions with limited access to research opportunities. The program provides research experience, mentorship, and resources to help students explore future roles in cardiovascular nursing. Funding comes from the American Heart Association.
The program includes:
- Mentored research experiences with a focus on cardiovascular disease and health disparities
- Didactic instruction from national experts in research and health equity
- Roundtable discussions with nurse scientists leading programs in the field
As a participant, you will receive a generous stipend and travel support. You can use this support to attend the American Heart Association Annual Conference in fall 2026 or other conferences approved by the LIVE Program Director.
2026 Program Dates and Commitment
The 2026 LIVE Program will run from June 1 to August 8, 2026. Participants must devote 30 hours per week to program activities during this period.
Eligibility
LIVE applicants must be both:
- United States citizens or permanent residents
- Enrolled in an accredited nursing program at an institution located in or serving regions with limited research infrastructure or resources
Application Process
Applications for the 2026 cohort are due February 17, 2026.
A complete application includes:
- Contact information
- Curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé
- Personal statement (up to 500 words) describing your interest in research to improve patient care and why you want to be part of a program focused on heart health and health equity
- Two letters of recommendation from academic faculty or mentors
- Official transcript from your undergraduate nursing program
- Completed attestation from your program director, chair, or dean confirming that:
- You are in good academic standing.
- The program schedule is feasible and compatible with your coursework and school expectations during the summer.
- The program provides learning experiences and mentorship not otherwise available through existing coursework or curriculum.
