As leaders in minimally invasive surgery, our surgeons are experts in numerous innovative laparoscopic technologies that have certain advantages over open surgery. For gynecologic cancer, whenever possible, our surgeons will use minimally invasive procedures so you have a faster recovery time, fewer side effects, and can go home the day of or the day after surgery.

Our gynecologic oncologists specialize in the following:

  • Laparoscopic treatment—a minimally invasive surgical approach that to remove noncancerous (benign) ovarian cysts or to treat ovarian cancer
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) —uses electrical current that passes through a thin wire loop as a knife to remove abnormal cervical tissue or cancer LIST LAST
  •  Total laparoscopic surgery—removes the uterus and cervix through a small incision in the abdomen
  • Robotic—another form of laparoscopic treatment that makes minimal incisions, in. surgery more widely available
  • Sentinel nodes–identification of a single node that may be predictive of the status of other nodes
  • Hysteroscopic surgery–surgery done from within the uterine cavity

Among the various innovative minimally invasive surgical procedures, we may use HIPEC or robotic surgical techniques to provide you precise surgical treatment along with a shorter hospital stay and shorter recovery times compared to open surgery.

  • HIPEC—hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) treats tumors in the abdomen, such as peritoneal cancer and ovarian cancer. This unique approach delivers chemotherapy directly to the cancer laparoscopically. Mount Sinai has extensive successful experience with HIPEC, having pioneered the procedure in 2007.
  • Robotic surgery—our surgeons have years of successful experience using the latest robotic surgical techniques that we are leaders in developing. The da Vinci surgical system enables us to perform complex procedures with smaller incisions. This adds up to the best treatment for your gynecologic cancer
