Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care

If your child requires intensive care to recover from heart surgery or other serious cardiac illness, the Children’s Heart Center—an alliance between Mount Sinai and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) —provides world-class treatment to newborns, infants, children, and adolescents from the greater New York region and beyond.

Our patients are treated in a state-of-the-art pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU) at Mount Sinai’s Kravis Children’s Hospital.  Our team consists of specially trained and experienced cardiac intensivists, cardiac surgeons, and cardiac critical care nurses in addition to dedicated respiratory therapists, physician assistants, pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists, and child life specialists, all committed to serve the needs of our patients and families.

Our PCICU was the first unit dedicated to pediatric cardiac critical care in the greater New York area. For over 30 years, we have treated children who are critically ill with heart conditions or recovering from surgery related to the heart and associated blood vessels in the chest.

Conditions

Most patients in the PCICU are recovering from heart surgery. However, we also provide treatment for a wide range of conditions including:

We are able to support the heart and circulation of the most critically ill patients with advanced treatments such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist devices (VAD).  Our colleagues in the Department of Pediatrics at the Kravis Children’s Hospital are available to provide the full range of pediatric subspecialty consult services.

Our Alliance with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)

Our alliance with CHOP has allowed the Children’s Heart Center to recently add several experienced cardiac intensivists to our already seasoned team. Together with CHOP, we are building one of the most advanced cardiac critical care units for children in the metropolitan area, designed to provide cutting edge care in a family centered environment.

At the Children’s Heart Center, we are advancing the future of care critical care medicine by establishing a telemedicine program. This program allows our hospitals to discuss rare and complex cases with one another to make the most informed decisions about your child’s care.
