Mount Sinai Brooklyn is home to a highly skilled breast surgery team that is committed to bringing outstanding care to our convenient Brooklyn location. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer and other breast conditions will receive the same high level of care they have come to expect from the Mount Sinai Health System. Our patients do not have to travel to different locations for access to the care they need, as they might in other programs. Patients can have their mammogram, their biopsy, and their consultation with the surgeon and medical oncologist all at the same location. In fact, our breast surgeon and medical oncologist often see patients on the same day, which helps expedite the start of therapy and helps reduce a patient’s stress.
Drawing on the research and resources of the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center, our breast team tailors the right treatment plan for each of our patients that offers the best possible outcomes with the least side effects. In addition, patients are eligible to enroll in Mount Sinai’s breast cancer clinical trials. We also promote the importance of screening for breast cancer with regular mammograms. Breast cancer caught early requires less treatment and may even be curable.
Breast Conditions We Treat
Our breast surgery team has deep experience diagnosing and treating all conditions of the breast in both women and men, including:
- Breast cancer
- Pre-invasive breast cancer (also called carcinoma in situ)
- High-risk lesions, such as atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
- Benign masses, such as fibroadenoma
- Non-mass related conditions, such as breast pain and nipple discharge
- Male breast cancer
- Gynecomastia

- Stereotactic and ultrasound-guided needle biopsies
- MRI-guided biopsies

Medical Oncology Services We Provide
Our breast surgery team includes a fellowship-trained medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and other specialists who work together to personalize the right treatment plan for each patient. We treat patients with early stage and advanced stage breast cancer as well as patients with pre-cancerous and high-risk breast lesions that put them at increased risk of breast cancer.
The treatment of breast cancer requires multidisciplinary teamwork, often-involving surgery, radiation, and nonsurgical therapies. Breast cancer is typically treated first with surgery, followed by radiation (depending on the type of breast cancer) and often followed by systemic therapy, which might include anti-estrogen therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, especially for triple-negative cancer. Our medical oncologist reviews each patient’s treatment journey and works with each patient to establish treatment goals and expectations.
We also work closely with the Mount Sinai Brooklyn-Infusion Center to provide patients with an array of the latest, most effective therapies. With advancements in breast cancer treatments and research, patients have many promising options as therapies have become more tailored to particular disease types and are designed to minimize side effects. We offer the following breast oncology services:
- Chemotherapy, a type of cancer treatment that uses one or more anti-cancer drugs.
- Hormonal or anti-estrogen therapy, a form of therapy used alongside surgery with the goal of slowing or stopping the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors, as well as helping prevent possible recurrence of cancerous tumors.
- HER2-directed therapies targeting HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2), a protein that promotes the growth of cancer cells, have had an important impact on breast cancer survival.
- Immunotherapy, a type of cancer treatment that helps the immune system fight your cancer.
- Targeted therapy (or personalized medicine), a cancer treatment that’s focused on genetic changes or mutations that turn healthy cells into cancer cells and uses that information to develop therapies targeted to the specific cancer cells.
