Mount Sinai Celebrates Nurses Week 2025 by Honoring Innovation, Community Service and the Next Generation of Caregivers

National Nurses Week, observed annually from May 6 -12, is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of nurses. This year, the Mount Sinai Health System is proud to celebrate the dedication, leadership, and transformative impact of its nurses—from the bedside to the research bench to the classroom.

This is a time to recognize the essential role of nurses in shaping the past, present, and future of health care. Nurses are not only trusted care providers—they are problem solvers, advocates, educators, and change agents. Their unique position at the intersection of compassion and clinical expertise gives them the power to drive real and lasting improvements in patient care, health equity, and systemwide outcomes.

“Nurses Week is a powerful reminder of the heart and soul nurses bring to health care every day,” says Beth Oliver, DNP, RN, FAAN, Chief Nurse Executive of the Mount Sinai Health System. “At Mount Sinai, our nurses lead with clinical excellence, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the patients and communities we serve. From embracing innovation to championing health equity, they are transforming care—and the future of our profession. Thank you to each of our nurses for your amazing contributions.”

The future of wound care is here

Earlier this year, Mount Sinai featured an innovative project that was the idea of a clinical nurse, Maria “Vickee” Sevillano, BSN, RN, CWCN, COCN, and developed by Robbie Freeman, DNP, RN, Vice President of Digital Experience and Chief Nursing Informatics Officer at the Mount Sinai Health System. They created an AI-driven solution to transform care by accurately identifying patients at risk for pressure injuries, and preventing these wounds before they start. Each year, preventable pressure injuries cost patients time and hospitals millions.

“We embraced Vickee’s idea, collaboratively explored its nuances through a co-design process, and partnered with our internal data scientists and software engineers to transform it into a fully realized product,” says Dr. Freeman. “We tested and fine-tuned it, and in early 2024, the idea was introduced to the clinical setting. This predictive software is currently embedded in our electronic medical records at The Mount Sinai Hospital, and we hope to expand its use as we continue to evaluate the product.”

By leveraging artificial intelligence to predict pressure injuries, Mount Sinai is are allowing wound care nurses to refine workflows and enhance patient outcomes. This innovative approach is making Mount Sinai nurses more efficient, while reducing costs and saving lives.

Mount Sinai nurses in the community

The impact of Mount Sinai nurses extends far beyond hospital walls. Community service is a core nursing value—and this Nurses Week, one special initiative exemplifies that spirit. On Friday, May 9, emergency nurses from The Mount Sinai Hospital will collaborate with Prom Plus NYC, a local nonprofit, that helps underserved high school seniors shine on one of the most memorable nights of their lives: prom.

As part of a one-day “Prom Boutique” event at Martin Luther King Jr. High School on Amsterdam Avenue, Mount Sinai nurses are collecting gently used formalwear and accessories—and volunteering their time to help students choose outfits, get styled, and feel celebrated. The event caps off a year of mentorship and support led by Prom Plus NYC.

For many students, the cost of prom attire can be a barrier to participating in this rite of passage. Mount Sinai nurses are helping to change that—one dress, one suit, and one moment of confidence at a time.

Inspiring the next generation of nurses

On Tuesday, April 29, more than 70 student nurses graduated from the Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai, marking a major milestone in their journey to becoming compassionate, skilled, and confident caregivers. These new graduates represent the future of health care—bringing fresh energy, lived experience, and a deep commitment to community into the profession.

Mount Sinai is investing in supporting their success beyond the classroom. Through structured pathways to employment within the Health System and tuition reimbursement incentives, Mount Sinai is building a strong pipeline designed to retain top talent and support long-term professional growth.

“Our mission is not only to educate the next generation of nurses, but to make sure they have a clear path to meaningful work where they can thrive,” says Kimberly Glassman, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAONL, FAAN, Dean of the Phillips School of Nursing. “We are proud to partner with our hospitals to provide hands-on experience and real career opportunities that allow our graduates to grow within the Mount Sinai family.”
