[00:00:00] Stephen Calabria: From the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, this is Road to Resilience, a podcast about facing adversity. I'm Stephen Calabria. I joined Mount Sinai last year to lead its podcasting studio, which includes hosting and producing this show.
[00:00:18] Our regular listeners know just how insightful and meaningful Road to Resilience has been in just a few short years, with guests that included physicians, scientists, authors, athletes, entertainers, medical patients, and everyone in between sharing stories of trials and hardships. Each guest was different and showed the kind of heart that made this show the success it’s become.
[00:00:39] I also have big shoes to fill in the twin roles of producer and host. Listeners recognize my predecessor, Jon Earl, as having been a great facilitator of conversations that lent practical tips on how to lead a more resilient life, while also offering commentary on the human condition.
[00:00:55] It's in that spirit of being a vessel for discussion that I'm humbled to help chart the future of this show. I began my career working in print and TV journalism, and had the privilege of profiling a great many people over the years, both the famous and the obscure who I admired and who demonstrated the hallmarks of resilience.
[00:01:12] It wasn't until years later I got involved in podcasting. Through running multiple podcasts for a standup comedy club, I was again inspired, as I got to see resilience in an entirely new light. Picture telling jokes on stage in front of 200 people for 15 minutes and having barely anybody laugh. For many of us that would be a horrifying and traumatic experience; for a comedian, however, it's more often a problem to be overcome and one they frequently laugh about years later.
[00:01:41] Which brings us to Road to Resilience and Mount Sinai, where the stakes are further elevated and diversified. Among the folks we'll speak with will be medical practitioners on lessons they've taken from their practices; researchers whose findings are meant to make our own resilience journeys just a little bit easier; and ordinary folks who were thrust into extraordinary circumstances and who came out the other side with stories to share.
[00:02:04] Tune into our first full-length episode next week, when I talk to two of Mount Sinai's leading experts and researchers in the field of long covid. I'm Stephen Calabria and this is Road to Resilience.
