Dan Iosifescu, MD, is named Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience.
Mood Disorders expert Dan Iosifescu, MD, has joined The Mount Sinai Medical Center as Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience. His appointment was effective on May 3.
“The Mount Sinai Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program is on the cutting edge of research on brain processes, treatments, and quality of life improvements in people with these illnesses,” said Wayne Goodman, MD, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and the Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Neuroscience, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “Dr. Iosifescu is a leader in translational research in mood disorders, and we look forward to further integrating research and clinical care in this program under his guidance.”
To further Mount Sinai’s commitment to translational research, Dr. Iosifescu will build a clinical Center of Excellence in mood disorders that will offer a range of treatments including expert pharmacotherapy, cognitive therapy, and novel interventions for treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder. He also plans to expand Mount Sinai’s outstanding research program in mood and anxiety disorders.
Authoring more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals, nine book chapters, and more than 50 abstracts, Dr. Iosifescu’s research is focused on biological markers of treatment outcome in mood disorders. Using neuroimaging (MRI, MRS) and neurophysiology (quantitative EEG) techniques, he investigates structural, biochemical, and functional brain abnormalities in mood disorders and their impact on clinical treatment. He has a particular interest in the impact of medical diseases that are often associated with mood disorders, such as vascular disease.
Dr. Iosifescu has been recognized by several organizations for his contribution to mood disorder research. He received the NARSAD Young Investigator Award twice, the Kaplen Award and the Livingston Award from Harvard Medical School, the American Psychological Association Young Investigator Award, the NCDEU New Investigator Award, and a National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) K23 Career Development Award. Dr. Iosifescu was also designated among the “Top Doctors in Boston” by Boston Magazine (2006 and 2008) and among the “Best Doctors in America” in all editions of “Best Doctors” from Castle Connolly, Ltd. since 2005.
Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Iosifescu served at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as Director of Translational Neuroscience and as Site Director of the NIMH Bipolar Trials Network. He was also Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. In these capacities he led the day-to-day operation of the MGH site as part of an internationally-known clinical research network. Dr. Iosifescu has continuously received independent funding from NIMH since 2003, currently studying treatments for cognitive deficits in bipolar disorder.
After receiving his MD from the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, Dr. Iosifescu completed his internship and psychiatry residency at MGH and McLean Hospital, serving as chief resident in consultation-liaison psychiatry. His research training included a neuroimaging fellowship in the Neuroscience Laboratory at Harvard Medical School, a psychopharmacology fellowship in the MGH Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute, and a fellowship in the Clinical Investigator Training Program at Harvard and MIT. In parallel, Dr. Iosifescu received a Master of Medical Science degree from Harvard University.
