Night sweats are uncomfortable, to say the least. More than 40 percent of women in an Australian study states they experienced night sweats at least once in the past month. "I think people think night sweats are just because it's hot," says Neomi Shah, MD, associate professor of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "But it may be from underlying health issues that can be serious or life threatening." Sometimes really basic things like acid reflux and stress can trigger night sweats by activating your body’s adrenaline. Patients taking antidepressants can definitely see an uptick in night sweats, as certain classes of medications can cause an adrenergic reaction, which has to do with your adrenaline levels and leads to sweating. Dr. Shah said there are drugs doctors can prescribe to calm down the adrenergic output, which won’t counteract your mental-health needs.
