New York Proton Center

When you need radiation treatment to fight your cancer, you may worry about side effects, or about damaging your healthy tissue. Proton therapy is an advanced technology that destroys cancer cells while protecting healthy cells and minimizing side effects.

Proton therapy is highly specialized and not widely available. We are pleased to announce that Mount Sinai Health System, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Montefiore Medical Center have joined forces to open the New York Proton Center, the first proton therapy facility in New York State.

Benefits of Proton Therapy

Proton therapy provides several benefits to treat cancer.

  • Provides a highly concentrated dose of radiation
  • Targets the tumor, protecting nearby healthy tissue
  • Treats the most challenging tumors
  • Uses less radiation than traditional radiology treatment

About the New York Proton Center

This 140,000-square-foot center is located in East Harlem. We offer a staff of 23 proton therapy-trained radiation oncologists. The advanced treatment technology includes:

  • Second-generation proton therapy with pencil beam scanning that allows optimal treatment for the most complex tumors
  • Volumetric imaging, which helps physicians precisely identify and target cancers to millimeter accuracy

The New York Proton Center's team will coordinate care with your physicians to ensure a seamless experience. At the Center, we treat a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • Brain and spine tumors
  • Breast
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Gynecologic cancers
  • Head and neck tumors
  • Lung and other thoracic cancers
  • Lymphomas
  • Prostate cancer
  • Sarcomas

Patients will be able to come to the center for treatment of recurrent cancers. In addition, the Proton Center will treat most children in the New York metro region who have solid tumors. We anticipate that the New York Proton Center will become one of the most active proton centers in the country.

Research and Clinical Trials

Researchers from the three health care institutions will conduct clinical trials at the Proton Center. Studies will consider the benefits of proton therapy over photon therapy for a variety of types of cancer including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Prostate cancer

We will also study its effects on patients who have already had extensive proton radiation and have tumor recurrences.

In addition to proton therapy services, the Center is proud to anchor the 125th Street Development Project, an economic development initiative dedicated to enriching the East Harlem community.
