Mount Sinai’s Dr. Bruce Sands Receives Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award
Bruce E. Sands, MD, MS, Dr. Burrill B. Crohn Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Dr. Henry D. Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, received the Henry D. Janowitz Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Clinical and Research Conference, held December 8-10 in Orlando, FL.
Dr. Sands was nominated by the medical and research community for his exceptional dedication to the field of IBD. For his entire professional career, Dr. Sands has focused his research and clinical care on IBD. He helped to launch the Susan and Leonard Feinstein IBD Clinical Center at Mount Sinai and has been the principal investigator on a number of groundbreaking studies of new therapeutic agents for the treatment of IBD. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles on the topic of inflammatory bowel disease, including papers on etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
Dr. Sands previously served as the Chair of the CCFA’s Clinical Research Alliance, and on the National Scientific Advisory Committee. He is a past chair of the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD) and has also served as the Chair of the Immunology, Microbiology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Section of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Sands has been an Associate Editor for the journal Gastroenterology, and is on the Editorial Board of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
Before coming to Mount Sinai, Dr. Sands was on the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he founded and co-directed the MGH Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and served as Acting Chief of the Gastrointestinal Unit. While in Boston, he served as Chair of the CCFA’s New England Chapter’s Medical Advisory Committee and was awarded Humanitarian of the Year in 2006.
