April is National Autism Awareness Month. While the cause of autism has been difficult to uncover, research is continually improving doctors' understanding of the disorder. "At this point we know that autism is a primarily genetic disorder with some environmental influence," says Alexander Kolevzon , clinical director of the Seaver Research Center at Mount Sinai. "We know this based on studies of identical twins that provide estimates of heritability.”
