Bruce Darrow, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), has been appointed Chief Medical Information Officer at The Mount Sinai Medical Center.  As CMIO, Dr. Darrow will oversee the implementation and use of information technology to improve quality of care and patient safety.  Recently, Dr. Darrow and his team were instrumental in Mount Sinai being named the recipient of the prestigious HIMSS 2012 Davies Enterprise Award, an honor given by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS); furthermore, Mount Sinai was also recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation's "Most Connected Hospitals" in 2012.

Dr. Darrow had served as interim CMIO since February 2012.  In this position, he will report to Kumar Chatani, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, and will be a member of Mount Sinai's Information Technology Leadership Team.  He will also continue to maintain an active clinical cardiology practice at Mount Sinai.

"As both CMIO and practicing physician, I see both sides of how information technology is continually used to improve quality of care and patient safety at Mount Sinai," said Dr. Darrow.  "It's a pleasure to work every day with our team, whose commitment to using technology, from electronic health records to better track the progress of patients, to  supercomputers to provide personalized care, is unparalleled.  I'm honored to work with the men and women of this department as we continue to keep Mount Sinai at the forefront of innovative technology in healthcare."

"I am delighted to have a leader with such breadth join our IT team," said Mr. Chatani.  "Dr. Darrow has impressed me with his professionalism, teamwork and drive for excellence.  He has a great reputation with our clinical staff and was recently awarded the Physician of the Year award by our Nursing department.  The information technology team at Mount Sinai is nationally recognized as a leader, thanks to excellent people like Dr. Darrow, who are passionate about serving our patients, clinical staff, faculty and students."

Since 2010, Dr. Darrow has served as Mount Sinai's Inpatient Physician Champion for Epic, the hospital's state-of-the-art electronic medical record system, and coordinated clinical support for Epic's inpatient launch in 2011.  In his new position, Dr. Darrow will oversee several other key initiatives, among them the roll-out of Epic at Mount Sinai Queens; the development and expansion of Mount Sinai's capability as an Accountable Care Organization; the integration of clinical data across The Mount Sinai Health Network; and the creation of key metrics for quality outcomes.
