Drs. Arash and Kamiar Alaei Present Grand Rounds on November 14th

Arash Alaei, MD and Kamiar Alaei, MD, DrPH will present the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health’s November Grand Rounds. Their presentation, entitled, “The Human Rights-Based Approached to Health for People Living with HIV/AIDS in Iran,” will discuss community based approaches for HIV/AIDS prevention and care in Iran, triangular clinics that integrate HIV/AIDS, STI, and addiction programs, and other best practices. Their presentation will focus on the context of Iran, where the government has resisted treatment and control of the disease.

Drs. Arash and Kamiar Alaei, brothers, direct the Global Institute for Health and Human Rights at the University of Albany. Dr. Arash Alaei is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Behavior at the University at Albany School of Public Health. Dr. Kamiar Alaei is a Public Service Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Policy at the University of Albany Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy. Together they co-founded the first center for HIV/AIDS cases and drug users in Iran, which was selected by the United Nations/World Health Organization as a Best Practice model. Drs. Arash and Kamiar Alaei received the Heinz R. Pagels Human Rights of Scientists Award from the New York Academy of Science in 2009, the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights from the Global Health Council in June 2011, the Award for Leadership in Health and Human Rights from PAHO/WHO in 2011, and the Elizabeth Taylor Award in Recognition of Efforts to Advocate for Human Rights in the field of HIV from the International AIDS Society in 2012.

As part of the Mount Sinai Health System’s virtual campus, videoconferencing will be offered with the Beth Israel Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine and the Mount Sinai-affiliated Mid Hudson Family Practice Residency in Kingston.

The event will be held from 8-9am on Friday, November 14th in Mount Sinai’s Hess Seminar Room A in the Hess Center for Science and Medicine (1470 Madison Avenue between 101st & 102nd St), 2nd Floor. A light breakfast will be served at 7:45am. Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Grand Rounds are supported with a generous donation from the Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation. They are open to all and occur on the second Friday of every month throughout the academic year.
