Guidelines for Taking Blood Pressure at Home

To help us accurately track your blood pressure, you have to take it properly. Remember, even if you do it right, your blood pressure readings may vary. Do not worry if it is a little higher or a little lower than the previous reading. Our team will know if it is out of the normal range and will contact you. Bring your device and readings when you see your doctor.

Preparation

Before you take your blood pressure:

  • Avoid food, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol for 30 minutes before checking your blood pressure.
  • Empty your bladder.
  • Rest quietly in a seated position for at least five minutes.
  • Do not talk or text while you are checking your blood pressure.

Position

For the most accurate reading, you should be in the proper position. This means:

  • Sit with your back supported.
  • Keep both feet flat on the floor; do not cross your legs.
  • Place the cuff on your bare arm, not over clothing.
  • Position the cuff directly above your elbow (upper arm).
  • Pull the cuff taut, so it is equally tight at the top and bottom.
  • Rest your arm with the cuff on a flat surface, such as a table, so that it is at the level of your heart.

Frequency and Timing

To give us the best information to monitor you, please:

  • Take your blood pressure twice a week, at about the same time of day.
  • Each time, take two readings, at least one minute apart.
  • If you take a blood pressure medicine, take two readings at least one minute apart after you take your medication.
