Wound Care

Mount Sinai plastic and reconstructive surgeons provide expert wound care for all types of skin injuries. We bring together a multi-specialty team of board-certified surgeons and nurses who have extensive knowledge in all areas of wound care management. Your comprehensive wound care team will treat the wound and any underlying conditions that have contributed to your having a wound that has not healed. Working collaboratively with your other doctors, we develop a wound treatment program to heal your wound, whatever its cause. Additionally, our skilled staff listens to you to understand your goals and offers treatment based on your desires and needs.

Underlying Causes

Poor circulation, diabetes, trauma from surgery, bone infections, and pressure ulcers are some of the conditions which may result in wounds that do not respond to ordinary treatment. Since your wound is unique, you will receive a thorough diagnostic exam to identify the type of wound and the underlying causes. By diagnosing the cause of your wound, we can develop the best treatment plan.

Treatments We Offer

Our specialized wound care restores your natural healing process by taking advantage of recent advances in wound care—whenever possible, without requiring surgery. We design a plan of care that you may be able to perform at home between your visits to see your doctor. We make sure that you get assistance you may need from a family member and/or community health resources, such as visiting nurses.

Physicians from a variety of disciplines may be involved in your care, including general surgeons, podiatrists, infectious disease specialists, plastic surgeons and vascular surgeons. When your wound care requires surgery, our plastic surgeons work with other specialists, as needed, to develop operative procedures that take into consideration your health care issues.

We develop an overall customized wound management plan using the most effective approaches which may include:

  • Compression therapy
  • Diabetic education
  • Debridement
  • Home health referrals
  • Infectious disease management
  • Laboratory evaluation
  • Nuclear medicine (radiation therapy)
  • Nutritional management
  • Occupational or physical therapy
  • Pain management
  • Patient education and counseling
  • Podiatry consultations
  • Skin care
  • Skin grafting
  • X-rays and bone scans
  • Vascular evaluation
  • Wound assessment

Our ultimate goal is to heal you as quickly and safely as possible. Our customized wound treatment plan offers a high level of limb salvage in severe wounds, earlier recovery, and restoration of your mobility.
