Foods high in sugar can trigger the same brain mechanism that is tied to drug addiction — causing overeating and a tendency to become addicted to certain foods, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “Food activates similar areas in the brain as drugs do, that is already accepted,” said Christoph Buettner, MD, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at The Mount Sinai Hospital, who was not affiliated with the study.
