"Doubled Over in Pain"

Given the patient’s clear discomfort, Dr. Ron Palmon at The Mount Sinai Medical Center expected the pain to spike when he applied pressure to the lower part of his abdomen, but it didn’t. So what could be the cause? Before making any decisions, Dr. Palmon decided to review the patient’s old chart to see if there was anything new since he’d seen him last, less than a week before. The day after the patient’s operation, the surgeon sent urine to be tested for a rare genetic disease known as acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). AIP is one of several diseases that result from problems in making heme, an essential component of red blood cells, muscles and certain enzymes. Learn more
