The Mount Sinai Medical Center has been recognized as one of the nation's top hospitals in the 2011-2012 "Best Hospitals" issue of U.S. News & World Report, ranking 16 out of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide, and earning a spot on the U.S. News "Honor Roll" of America’s best hospitals. Mount Sinai scored highly in 12 of 16 specialties, improving in nine specialties over the 2010 rankings, and maintaining its strong standing in three other areas, including its No. 1 ranking in Geriatrics.

"Despite economic and political challenges facing the health care industry, Mount Sinai’s position on the Honor Roll is indicative of our commitment to grow and to treat the patients who require the most sophisticated and complex care," said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and CEO of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "That enterprising spirit makes us a national leader in this area, and we are proud to be recognized in the rankings."

Mount Sinai retained its No. 5 ranking in Gastroenterology , and continued its remarkable improvement in Heart & Heart Surgery, which ranked 11 this year, up from 13 in 2010, and 41 in 2007. Mount Sinai also improved its year-to-year rankings in Cancer, Urology, Diabetes/Endocrinology, Kidney Disorders, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Ear, Nose & Throat, and Gynecology.

In the four specialties where rankings were based solely upon reputation, Rehabilitation rose to 14 from 16 last year, and Psychiatry maintained its strong position at 18.

"We are pleased by this public recognition of our success in building top ranked clinical programs," said Wayne Keathley, President and Chief Operating Officer, The Mount Sinai Hospital. "This is a team effort that includes world-class physicians, nurses, and support staff to make it possible."

Mount Sinai also ranked among the best hospitals in the New York metropolitan area. Covering 94 metro areas in the United States, the regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance in one or more of the 16 specialties in the America’s Best Hospitals list.

"The partnership between Mount Sinai School of Medicine and The Mount Sinai Hospital creates a unique synergy between transformative research and excellence in clinical care that fundamentally changes the practice of medicine," said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Dean of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "That legacy of translational research is what put Mount Sinai on the map, and combined with our commitment to comprehensive care, we will continue to rise in the rankings in years to come."

In arriving at its rankings for 12 specialties, U.S. News & World Report analyzed 4,825 hospitals in the United States, taking into account each institution's reputation, mortality index, patient safety record, discharges, and other care-related factors, including nursing and technology. The rankings for four specialties, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, and Rheumatology were based on reputation alone, and reflect a three-year running average, which means the gains made this year will serve as a strong foundation through 2014.

The 2011-2012 edition of America's Best Hospitals Honor Roll, published by U.S. News & World Report can be found online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and will be on newsstands Tuesday, August 30.
