Stuart C. Sealfon, MD, Named Chair of Neurology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Stuart C. Sealfon, MD, a leader in the study of the mechanisms of therapeutic and side effects of drugs, has been named Chair of the Department of Neurology.
Stuart C. Sealfon, MD, a leader in the study of the mechanisms of therapeutic and side effects of drugs, has been named Chair of the Department of Neurology. His appointment becomes effective on June 1.
Dr. Sealfon, who had been Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Neurology and Saunders Family Professor of Neurology, Neurobiology, Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics, has either directed or co-directed several research and education programs and initiatives at Mount Sinai including: the Pharmacology and Systems Biology Graduate Student Multidisciplinary Training Area; the Center for Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics; and the Center for Translational Systems Biology. Dr. Sealfon also leads the Modeling Immunity for Biodefense Center/Program for Research on Immune Modeling and Experimentation (PRIME).

At Mount Sinai, Dr. Sealfon’s laboratory applies a diverse systems biology approach to better understand how cells recognize and generate responses to extracellular signals or stimuli. His research focuses on signaling systems which are critical for understanding cell responses related to a broad range of neurological conditions.
Dr. Sealfon received his A.B. at Princeton University. After earning his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Sealfon completed his residency training in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been associated with Mount Sinai for more than two decades, as he first joined Mount Sinai as fellow in Neuroscience in 1986. Dr. Sealfon holds board certification in Neurology.
Dr. Sealfon has contributed to more than 100 original research articles, primarily related to receptors, cell signaling and brain disease. This body of work has significant potential for therapeutic advance, already having led to two awarded patents. He has also served on the editorial boards of numerous peer-reviewed journals and scientific advisory boards, and has lectured at universities and conferences throughout the world.
