When Mount Sinai Morningside patients need constant and close supervision, we often take care of them in one of our intensive care units (ICU). In our ICUs, we can provide 24/7 monitoring and life support. We have the most advanced critical care equipment and technology. Our staff is specially trained to provide this intensive level of care.

At Mount Sinai Morningside, we have three ICUs:

• Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU): We care for the sickest heart patients, offering both medical and surgical services. Conditions we treat include acute heart failure, cardiac arrest, and complex critical illnesses in cardiac patients.
• Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU): Here, we see a variety of patients with serious illnesses or injuries. These include patients who have cancer, severe infection, kidney failure, and respiratory failure.
• Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU): As a designated Level II trauma center, SICU cares for those patients who have experienced acute traumatic injuries. Also cared for are postoperative surgical patients, such as those who have undergone complex abdominal, neurosurgical, or orthopedic procedures.

Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit

Mount Sinai Morningside’s Cardiacvascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) cares for the sickest heart patients at Mount Sinai Morningside. We offer both medical and surgical services. We treat a variety of conditions, including:

• Acute myocardial infarction
• Complex coronary artery disease
• Acute heart failure
• Cardiogenic shock
• Cardiac arrhythmias
• Cardiac arrest
• Valvular heart disease
• Pericardial disease
• Myocarditis
• Endocarditis
• Complex critical illness in cardiac patients

We also care for patients following open heart surgery.

Our Team

The CVICU team includes cardiologists, nurses, and other allied health professionals with specific experience in critical care cardiology. In addition, our patients receive services from experts in social work, pastoral care, palliative care, nutrition, physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and respiratory therapy. We partner closely with the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery.

Our unit has 26 intensive care beds. We have a full range of advanced technologies available to support the highest level of care. We have a full range of options for percutaneous temporary mechanical circulatory support including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Medical Intensive Care Unit

At Mount Sinai Morningside’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), we take care of patients with serious injuries or illnesses. Our physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists provide 24/7 care. The MICU cares for a wide range of patients, including those who have:

• Cancer
• Heart attack
• Infections
• Kidney failure
• Pulmonary embolism
• Respiratory failure
• Stroke and other neurologic problems

Our Team

Our physicians are experts in critical care, pulmonology, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. They work closely with our nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, physical therapists, and respiratory therapists. We often involve specialists in other fields, when appropriate. Our social workers, chaplains, and palliative care specialists can offer emotional support for you and your family. Language interpretation is available. We use the most advanced approaches for sedation, respiratory failure, and pulmonary embolism. We work as a team works to provide continuity and safety as you transfer from the intensive care unit (ICU) to the medical units.

Our Facility

Our state-of-the-art facility has the latest in monitoring, ultrasound, and fiber optic imaging. We generally accommodate up to 16 patients, all in private rooms. In addition, we are located right next to the surgical intensive care unit. This gives us easy access to collaborate with surgical colleagues.

Palliative Care

At Mount Sinai Morningside, we realize that ICU patients and their families need support. We offer patient and family-centered care that focuses on quality of life. This means we try to ease uncomfortable symptoms, provide emotional support, and offer clear information about the patient’s condition. We work with the family on setting care goals and making decisions.
