Office of Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement

Mount Sinai is committed to providing you with the best possible surgical care—before, during, and after your procedure. As a result, our Department of Surgery's Office of Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement (SOQI) strives to continually improve our quality of care by focusing on accountability. And our efforts are paying off. Consumer Reports has rated Mount Sinai as a top academic medical center in New York State for surgical outcomes. In addition, in 2017 the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) recognized The Mount Sinai Hospital for meritorious outcomes in surgical patient care for three years in a row.

Led by educator Celia M. Divino, MD, FACS, Chief of the Aufses Division of General Surgery and Professor of Surgery, our collaborative teams work with national organizations to continuously improve our care and outcomes.  We use a variety of methods, including:

  • Developing clear pathways for you and other patients
  • Maintaining a culture of transparency
  • Monthly Quality Assurance Committee and Process Improvement Committee meetings and weekly Morbidity and Mortality Conferences
  • Regularly monitoring outcomes
  • Routinely reporting errors, reducing complications, and communicating medication compliance
  • Using interactive online tools, data analysis, and feedback
  • Taking a team-based approach
  • Working closely with programs including the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, Pediatric American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP), the Collaborative Endocrine Surgery Quality Improvement Program (CESQIP), the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the Mount Sinai Health System Bariatric Collaborative, the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
