Why Refer to Us?
When considering where to refer your patients with complex aortic conditions, you will be looking for a program with experience, expertise, and proven success rates. The Vascular and Endovascular Surgery division at Mount Sinai provides all three.
According to 2019 SPARCS hospital discharge data, our team of vascular surgeons treat more vascular patients than any other health system in New York City. Additionally, we have a history of revolutionizing modern vascular surgery through the performance of surgical “firsts,” and the creation and development of new surgical techniques and devices. Mount Sinai vascular surgeons are not only required to provide top quality patient care, they are expected to contribute to the advancement of the field through scientific discovery and development of novel techniques and treatment modalities.
That standard of excellence was established when our Surgeon-in-Chief, Michael L. Marin, MD, together with Juan Parodi, MD, performed a minimally invasive repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm under local anesthesia in an 80-year-old man who had multiple medical comorbidities—the first such procedure ever performed in the United States. That procedure sparked the rapid development of new treatments by Dr. Marin and other physicians from around the world for the minimally invasive treatment of vascular disease. Inventions and techniques resulting from Dr. Marin’s work formed the basis of 12 important U.S. patents and colleagues continue to use and develop what Dr. Marin pioneered.
What Happens to My Patient Once I Refer to Your Program?
Upon your referral, we will work with you to provide a tailored, thoughtful approach to your patient’s case. Our mutual collaboration in your patient’s care is of utmost importance to us. We keep in close contact with you throughout your patient’s surgical journey and are happy to see them continue their routine care with you after a successful surgery. Of course, we remain available to all surgical patients for post-op care.

We are currently offering the following ongoing clinical trials to our patients, each under the direction of our vascular surgery specialists:
- Evaluation of the GORE® EXCLUDER® Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis in the Treatment of Thoracoabdominal and Pararenal Aortic Aneurysms
This clinical trial focuses on endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for TAAA patients and tests the safety and efficacy of the new stent graft, GORE® EXCLUDER® Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis (TAMBE device).
Principal Investigator: Rami Tadros, MD - Post-Approval Study of the TREO Abdominal Stent-Graft System
This clinical trial involves endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for AAA patients and tests the safety and efficacy of the new stent graft, the Nellix system.
Principal Investigator: James McKinsey, MD - Zenith® p-Branch® and Zenith® Fenestrated AAA Endovascular Graft Clinical Study:
This clinical trial focuses on endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for AAA patients and tests the safety and efficacy of the new study device, Zenith® p-Branch® or Zenith® Fenestrated AAA Endovascular Graft.
