Conditions We Treat

Mount Sinai’s Department of Ear, Nose and Throat/Head and Neck Surgery is widely recognized for its comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for the full spectrum of diseases affecting the head and neck. Our surgeons are consistently at the forefront of treatment for these conditions, namely endoscopic surgery techniques to remove head and neck/skull base and voice box tumors, robotic surgery (using the DaVinci Surgical System®) for sleep apnea, minimally invasive surgery for cosmetic enhancements, and surgical treatment for HPV and oral cancer. Our team of physician and surgeons crafts personalized treatment plans for each patient and have vast expertise in treating the following conditions and disorders:

  • Hearing and Balance Disorders: Mount Sinai’s Center for Hearing and Balance in New York City treats the full spectrum of hearing and balance disorders. This includes acoustic neuromas, autoimmune inner ear disease, cholesteatoma, chronic ear disease, facial nerve disorders, Meniere’s disease, and otosclerosis. Among the treatments we provide are bone-anchored hearing aids, cochlear implants, and skull base surgery.

  • Head and Neck Cancers: At Mount Sinai’s Center for Head and Neck Cancers our ear, nose, and throat surgeons remove tumors of the voice box, skull base, and neck through endoscopic surgery. During this procedure, the physician inserts an endoscope - a thin tube equipped with a tiny light and miniature video camera - into your body through a natural opening, such as your nose or throat, for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Your physician can then view the images captured by the endoscope on a video monitor. Endoscopic surgery is minimally invasive. Mount Sinai has developed techniques to remove skull base tumors endoscopically through the nose, leaving no visible sign of surgery.

  • Facial Defects, Cosmetic Irregularities, and Conditions Requiring Reconstructive Surgery: Our surgeons and specialists in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery have vast expertise in facial cosmetic surgery and use state-of-the-art endoscopic techniques to reshape facial features, including microvascular-free tissue transfer. We also provide surgical and nonsurgical therapies for patients with congenital, acquired, or traumatic problems of the oral cavity, jaws, and associated structures.

  • Nasal and Allergy Disorders: Mount Sinai is at the forefront of treating the full spectrum of nasal and sinus diseases. Our Nasal, Sinus and Allergy Disorder experts work in a multidisciplinary approach with various Departments to offer patients the optimal treatment plan for restoring their breathing and quality of life. Conditions we treat include chronic sinusitis, allergy and immune disorders, benign and malignant tumors, severe nosebleeds, optic nerve decompression and cerebrospinal fluid leaks.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Snoring: Mount Sinai’s Sleep Surgery Center offers comprehensive management and treatment of sleep disorders, using a multidisciplinary approach. From consultative care to robotic surgery, the collective expertise of this team addresses all conditions in sleep disordering breathing.

  • Thyroid and Parathyroid Diseases: Physicians and surgeons at the Center for Thyroid and Parathyroid Diseases help patients who are struggling with Graves disease, hyperparathyroidism, MEN syndrome, parathyroid hyperplasia and thyroid and parathyroid cancer. Employing the least invasive surgical techniques, our surgeons can remove a cancerous thyroid or parathyroid through a one-inch incision, resulting in a quicker recovery time and less postoperative pain.
