“Risk Factors in Youth Tied to Early Dementia”
Among men as young as 18, preventable factors such as alcohol intoxication, hypertension, illegal drug use, and antipsychotic use raised the risk of dementia before age 65, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. "In a way, this could be fantastic because hypertension is treatable, so diagnosing and treating adolescent hypertension should lead to reduced incidence of some YOD (young onset dementia),” said Samuel E. Gandy, MD, PhD, Associate Director of The Mount Sinai Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.
