About one million coronary artery stents are placed every year in the US. They hold blocked arteries open but they can also interfere with the arteries' normal function.

Samin Sharma, MD, Dean of International Clinical Affiliations, Professor of Medicine and Cardiology, and Director of Clinical and Interventional Cardiology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, is leading a clinical trial that uses a very different type of stent one that is made from the same material as dissolvable sutures, so it gets absorbed after about two years. "An artery will open up in a normal way and respond to the body's demands and exercise," said Dr. Sharma. The dissolvable stents are already approved and in use in Europe and India.
