A father-and-son team in the department of surgery at Mount Sinai, Drs. Adrian and Alexander Greenstein perform 200 operations a year to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Adrian specializes in IBD surgery and Alexander specializes in minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery. While inflammatory bowel disease is hardly a household word, almost 1.5 million Americans are currently living with the disease. “Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease, a condition of the bowel that can cause disabling symptoms such as diarrhea, anemia and abdominal pain,” says Dr. Alexander Greenstein. “People with Crohn’s have a 30 percent chance of having a relative with the disease, and eight percent of patients with ulcerative colitis have a family history,” says Dr. Adrian Greenstein.
