"No Date Set To Reopen Hospitals That Evacuated During Hurricane Sandy"
Families who endured illness, major surgery and high-wire births during the hurricane are beginning to find some equilibrium. Many are grateful, including Brooklyn mom Deborah Dadlani, the first of 300 patients to be evacuated from NYU Medical Center. When the power went out, she was having bleeding and contractions, and needed an emergency C-section to save her and her child. She was carried down eight flights of stairs, her frantic husband lighting the way with his iPad. A team of EMT's from Michigan raced them up to Mount Sinai, where Dadlani gave birth to a 3 lb. 1 oz. son. Baby Kiran, born at 29 weeks, is now being cared for at Mount Sinai's top ranked neonatal intensive care unit and is thriving. "He is good hands," said a relieved Michael Heiman, Kiran’s father. "The staff at Mount Sinai is amazing. And what NYU did to get people out was beyond heroic. We were very, very lucky." Learn more
