National Summit on Hospital Rankings to be Hosted by The Mount Sinai Medical Center and U.S. News and World Report
For the first time ever, leaders from the nation’s best hospitals will congregate with editors from U.S. News & World Report to discuss the “Best Hospitals” rankings methodology.
For the first time ever, leaders and specialists from the nation’s best hospitals and academic medical centers will come together with top editors from U.S. News & World Report to discuss the methodology behind U.S. News’ annual "Best Hospitals" rankings and their value to consumers and the institutions they rank. The national summit, titled "Shaping Health Care Decisions: An Inside Look at Hospital Rankings," will be held at The Mount Sinai Medical Center on Thursday, September 27, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
According to a 2011 study from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health, 38 percent of Americans use hospital ratings to make a hospital decision, highlighting the importance of the U.S. News summit and of consumer tools like the "Best Hospitals" rankings.
During three panel discussions, health care leaders and editors will explore how current rankings assess quality, what quantifiable data could complement and correlate to reputational criteria, and how the rankings can be expanded to respond to advances in technology and biomedical science, as well as the demographics of health care needs.
"The goal of the summit is to create a dialogue for discussion and explore ways to enhance the methodology to reflect the growing importance of advancements in medicine that allow us to better prevent, diagnose and treat disease," Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Mount Sinai Medical Center explained. "We would also like to explore the socioeconomic challenges that hospitals face when providing care to sicker and poorer populations, and methods to reflect that in the rankings."
Held at Mount Sinai’s Goldwurm Auditorium, in Manhattan, the event will be moderated by U.S. News Editor and Chief Content Officer Brian Kelly.
"We're an important information resource for consumers and medical professionals," Kelly noted. "As health care data becomes more sophisticated, we want to make sure that we're using it in the best possible way."

In 2011, Mount Sinai and U.S. News hosted a successful summit which coincided with the 20th anniversary of U.S. News’ "Best Medical Schools" annual rankings, marking the first time U.S. News editors have discussed their medical school ranking system in a public forum with leaders of institutions being ranked.
