Astoria Eats Heart Healthy-For Free!

Mount Sinai Queens and United Community Civic Association present Eat Heartily led by Chef Rocco Sacramone

Mount Sinai Queens and the United Community Civic Association presented Eat Heartily, a culinary celebration of the heart led by Astoria’s acclaimed chef, Rocco Sacramone, on the evening of Wednesday, February 23. Almost 200 guests attended the free event, which was held at Astoria’s Central Sushi Bar and Lounge.

The evening’s event focused on heart-healthy eating, and included cooking demonstrations and tastings by Rocco Sacramone, chef and owner of top Italian restaurant, Trattoria L’incontro. Mount Sinai Queens Nutritionist Allison Caplowaith, RD, CDN supervised the menu choices to assure that they were approved for a heart-healthy diet and provided nutritional content.

Sacramone cooked two dishes; Modified Tubettini Fagioli, featuring whole wheat pasta, low sodium chicken broth and olive oil topped with low fat grated parmesan cheese and baked Chilean Sea Bass with sautéed cauliflower and chicken broth that was blended into a puree.

Rocco Sacramone, chef/owner of Astoria’s Trattoria L’incontro is an Italian native and longtime Astoria resident. Since Sacramone opened his restaurant in 1999, it has been listed in the Michelin Guide and was recently named best Italian restaurant by the Zagat Restaurant Guide. Because of his generosity and community activism, Sacramone has received numerous awards including the Community Loyalist Award, Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and proclamations from Council Member Peter Vallone Jr., then Assembly Member Michael Gianaris and former State Senator George Onorato.

The mission of the United Community Civic Association is to promote, foster and encourage citizen participation, activism and involvement towards the betterment of all the neighborhoods of Queens County. They seek to increase interest in the civic affairs of the community, to develop good citizenship, to encourage citizen participation and involvement in community improvement programs and in local commercial interests in the various communities of Queens County, especially Western Queen. The association regularly conducts forums to promote community opinions on contemporary beautification and restoration issues as well as quality of life concerns affecting the community as a whole.

Since it’s opening in 2002, Central Sushi Bar & Lounge has been one of the most chic and trendy venues in Queens. Owned by Nick Neocleous, Central Sushi Bar & Lounge offers a full Asian-Mediterranean fusion menu, and housing a late night sushi bar, Central Sushi Bar and Lounge is also distinguished by its special guests including celebrities Tommy Lee, DJ Am, Tyson Beckford and Ashley Simpson.

Mount Sinai Queens is a 235-bed community hospital located in Long Island City and serving the communities of western Queens and beyond. It was purchased by The Mount Sinai Medical Center in June 1999 and has a medical staff of more than 500 physicians representing 37 medical and surgical specialties.
