Asian American doctors, overrepresented in medicine, are largely left out of leadership
Bias, stereotypes, and cultural factors contribute to the lack of leadership positions for Asian American doctors. The Mount Sinai Center for Asian Equity and Professional Development at the Icahn School of Medicine was established to address this issue and increase Asian American physicians' opportunities for leadership roles. Amanda Rhee, an anesthesiologist and associate professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and James Tsai, who chairs the ophthalmology department at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, are leading the center and aim to share their leadership experiences to empower other Asian American physicians.

Mount Sinai Participates in $40 Million Multisite Study of Alzheimer’s Disease in Asian Americans and Asian Canadians
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is one of 16 academic medical research centers to participate in the Asian Cohort for Alzheimer’s Disease (ACAD) study, funded by a $40.5 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The project represents the first major Alzheimer’s disease genetics cohort for Asian Americans and Asian Canadians, populations currently underrepresented in Alzheimer’s disease research.

Message to CAABR
We are heartbroken to learn of the devastating and senseless murders of Michelle Go and Christina Lee. Since the pandemic nearly two thirds of anti-Asian hate victims have been women – these are the ones that have been reported. According to the FBI, anti-Asian hate crimes increased by 73%. This murder is an abrupt reminder of the important work that needs to be carried out to overcome anti-Asian bias and racism.

Committee to Address Anti-Asian Bias and Racism and Supporting Your Safety
We are pleased to announce the recent formation of the Committee to Address Anti-Asian Bias and Racism (CAABR). We formed this committee in April of this year to address the growing concerns and fears about the racism experienced by our Asian and Asian American colleagues. Co-chaired by Amanda Rhee, MD, and James Tsai, MD, the committee is tasked with engaging stakeholders from across the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Health System to develop and implement strategies to address anti-Asian bias and racism.

Mount Sinai Launches Center to Address Bias and Racism Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
Seeking to address racism and bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), as well as the under-representation of AAPI in leadership roles in medicine, Mount Sinai announced today the launch of the Center for Asian Equity and Professional Development (CAEPD). This innovative undertaking represents one of the first of its kind nationwide by an academic medical center.
