Hannah Gavios, a 26year-old former competitive runner and avid yoga enthusiast, was paralyzed in Thailand three years ago after falling over 150 feet from a cliff as she tried to escape a sexual assault from a man she asked for directions. Ms. Gavios suffered a spinal cord injury that leaves her unable to move or feel her feet and ankles.

When the Queens native returned to New York, she was hospitalized for months. Looking down at the marathon that year from her room at a Mount Sinai Health System hospital in Manhattan, she grew bitter watching the runners on Fifth Avenue. “I was so fast like all these people, and now I’m so crippled,” she said she recalled thinking to herself. “The last time I ran ever, was when I was running from my attacker.” As she watched the race a year later, though, she said the runners inspired her. She decided to hire a trainer, who coached her over the phone from North Carolina, and started to practice using crutches for extended periods. For the 2018 marathon, she ran with her crutches alongside Ms. Sullivan for the entire race, finishing in 11 hours and 20 minutes. This year, her goal is to finish in under ten hours.
