Jagat Narula, MD, PhD, Philip J. and  Harriet L. Goodhart Professor of Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, will be named the 2018 Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in honor of his contributions to the cardiovascular profession. Dr. Narula will be recognized for these achievements along with other 2018 award winners at the Convocation Ceremony on Monday, March 12, during the ACC’s 67th Annual Scientific Session in Orlando, Florida. Only 25 people have been named as distinguished fellows in the College’s history.

The Distinguished Fellow Award is awarded to a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology who is well recognized for service to the College and whose activities are considered to qualify him or her as a role model for others.

As a world-renowned translational researcher in cardiovascular medicine and imaging, Dr. Narula is widely recognized for his contributions toward preventing and understanding heart attacks and heart failure. Pioneering work from Dr. Narula has included the description of the phenomenon of heart muscle cell suicide, and the detection of atherosclerotic plaques that are likely to cause acute heart attacks. His research combines molecular and subcellular pathology and imaging with clinical imaging of the failing heart muscle cells and high-risk atherosclerotic plaques to develop strategies for prevention of cardiovascular disease in developed as well as developing countries. He was the founder and editor in chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Imaging and is the editor in chief of Global Heart, the official Journal of the World Heart Federation.

Nineteen awards will be presented at the Annual Scientific Session this year in various categories, each recognizing an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine. Recipients are nominated by their peers and then selected by the American College of Cardiology Awards Committee.
