The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidelines for preventing surgical site infections, in light of the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and in an effort to reduce the costs of treating such infections. Celia Divino, MD, chief of the division of general surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital said, "Surgical site infections are a significant burden to the patient, as well as the healthcare institutions. The Guidelines and best practices recommended by the CDC are supported by evidence-based medicine, and have been shown to decrease infections after surgery, in addition to improving outcomes for patients. The Department of Surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital has been on the forefront of these initiatives, and has implemented measures to reduce surgical site infections for more than four years. As one of the busiest GI surgical centers in New York City, we acutely understand the need for decreasing instances of surgical site infections; not only for the benefit of the patient, but for society at large, who end up bearing the cost when infections do occur."
