Dr. Marla Dubinsky: “Prevention is theme of DDW, new IBD center”
WASHINGTON — In this video interview, Marla Dubinsky, MD, discusses the move to prevention and prophylactic options on the horizon in inflammatory bowel disease. First, she reveals that just last week, the ribbon was cut on the new Susan and Leonard Feinstein Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Center where Dubinsky will serve as co-director. Here, physicians will integrate pediatrics, adults and colorectal surgeons in the same geographic space, providing a “seamless transition” for pediatric patients to move to adult care. This patient-centered care model, Dubinsky said, will allow further research into preventive measures that can be taken for patients, something that has been discussed at length at DDW 2015. “There’s a lot of interesting discussions on the role of the microbiome, the role of genetics, the role of metabolites of bacterial byproducts that are all related to whether or not there are certain microbial profiles, certain metabolite profiles that are actually involved in risk of disease,” Dubinsky said. “We’ve moved into a new era. … Imagine a day when you can actually look at the microbiome profiles in whole families” and can provide explanations and treatments for their disease.
