Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin at all -- it is a group of fat-soluble steroid hormones responsible for a host of important functions in the body. Recent research has brought attention to the vital role of vitamin D in protecting the brain and preventing neurologic disease. So, should primary care physicians and neurologists be routinely checking vitamin D levels as part of regular check-ups? Should supplementation of vitamin D be encouraged in patients with low levels?
