Several Therapies Show Success in Treatment of Personality Disorders
Although trying to help individuals with personality disorders can be challenging for clinicians, several evidence-based psychotherapies are available to treat these patients. A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that schema therapy could benefit patients with avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, histrionic, narcissistic, or paranoid personality disorders. “This study is of interest as it suggests that a therapy centered on re-experiencing trauma in a supportive treatment may be helpful in treating some forms of personality disorder,” said Larry Siever, MD, Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
