Alisan Goldfarb, MD Receives Prestigious Award from American Cancer Society
Dr. Goldfarb was recognized with the Physician of Distinction Award for outstanding contributions to clinical care in breast cancer
Alisan B. Goldfarb, MD, FACS, Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, has been honored with the prestigious Physician of Distinction Award by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Dr. Goldfarb received the award at the ACS Awards in Medical Excellence reception on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 6:00 pm EDT at the Westin Times Square in Manhattan.
The award honors an individual who has made a tremendous impact in the field of oncology. It recognizes clinicians who are staunch advocates for their patients and work tirelessly to improve the quality of their lives, or have advanced medical technology or treatment of cancer through their research.
"Dr. Goldfarb has been a vital presence in the field of breast cancer surgery; delivering outstanding care and significantly improving the quality of her patients’ lives," said Michael L. Marin, MD, FACS, The Julius H. Jacobson II, MD Professor of Surgery, and Chair, Department of Surgery, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "This recognition is well-deserved."
A native New Yorker, Dr. Goldfarb received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in general surgery. Although beginning her practice as a general surgeon, her interests and talents soon led her to an active private practice limited to breast surgery. She was instrumental in establishing monthly multidisciplinary rounds in breast cancer at Mount Sinai, as well as a resource group for patient education and psychosocial support for breast cancer patients and their families. Dr. Goldfarb has contributed to textbooks, teaching tapes and journal articles. She is a past president of the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group and is a member of numerous other professional organizations. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

We have come a long way in education, early detection, and treatment of breast cancer, due in large part to support from the American Cancer Society and its programs," said Dr. Goldfarb. "Still, this disease affects one in eight women. We need to remain committed to finding a cure and improving the quality of life of our patients. Comprehensive care facilities like the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai are critical to that goal."
Encompassing more than 15,000 square feet at 1176 Fifth Avenue, the Dubin Breast Center represents a bold new vision for breast cancer treatment and research—one that focuses on the emotional, as well as the physical health of individuals who have or are at risk of developing breast cancer, as well as survivors and their families. The new Center is led by Co-Directors Elisa Port, MD, FACS, Chief of Breast Surgery, and George Raptis, MD, MBA, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and is the only such center located within an academic medical institution in New York City.
According to the ACS, proceeds from the awards ceremony will benefit the programs and services of the ACS’s Manhattan region and Hope Lodge NYC. Hope Lodge NYC, located in midtown Manhattan, provides free lodging and a complete supportive environment for cancer outpatients and their caregivers. Since opening three and a half years ago, this state-of-the-art facility has welcomed more than 5,500 guests from the metropolitan area, across the country and around the globe.
