The Mount Sinai Medical Center received the Department of Health and Human Services’ Organ Donation Silver 1 Medal of Honor on September 30th for achieving organ donations from at least 75 percent of eligible donors over a one-year period.

Mount Sinai was also recognized for achieving an organ donation rate of at least 10 percent in cases of donation after cardiac death, as opposed to brain death. Jennifer Frontera, MD, assistant professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, accepted the award in Gaylord, Texas, on behalf of Mount Sinai. Dr. Frontera is the medical director of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and is the chair of the Organ Donor Council at Mount Sinai.

Mount Sinai’s Organ Donor Council was established in 2006 and is comprised of Mount Sinai School of Medicine faculty, nurses, social workers, members of the New York Organ Donor Network, and the Eye Bank. Through the Organ Donor Council, Dr. Frontera has overseen a major educational thrust in the last 18 months to inform residents, fellows, and nurses about organ donation.
