Mount Sinai Queens Hosts 19th Annual Health Fair
Mount Sinai Queens hosted its 19th Community Health Fair co-sponsored by the United Community Civic Association today at Kaufman Astoria Studios. The Community Health Fair, held annually in Astoria since 2000, brings hundreds of families from throughout Queens and New York to an early-summer celebration that’s all about health and wellness. Dozens of activities are part of the day’s festivities, including free screenings, cooking demonstrations, live dance performances, music, refreshments, giveaways, face painting, and more.
“We work with our community partners throughout the year to promote healthy lifestyles, ensure access to quality care, and provide education about new services at the hospital,” said Caryn A. Schwab, Executive Director, Mount Sinai Queens. “We’re grateful to the United Community Civic Association for co-sponsoring today’s health fair. The event is special for us in terms of the number of people reached and the breadth of screenings we offer. As a bonus, it is a fun and festive day.”
The wide range of free screenings offered at the Health Fair include cholesterol, glucose, bone density and blood pressure. There is a nurse practitioner on site so participants can ask questions and get help understanding their results. It is very important that people follow up with their physicians—the screenings at the Health Fair are not a substitute for care.
New this year is a Main Stage with performances and clinics provided by Queens-based organizations, including a dance demonstration by Salsa in Queens; a Mixed Martial Arts presentation by Tiger Shulmann’s Martial Arts; an Irish stepdance performance by McManus Irish Dancers; a hula dance show by Na Pua Mai Ka Lani Nuioka; a core exercise clinic by Epiqueline, and “Latin Dance for Kids” by the Long Island City YMCA. Other activities include massage therapy, live cooking demonstrations, nutrition counseling, and “Ask the Pharmacist.”
“From the beginning, we felt like it was important to partner with Mount Sinai Queens to bring health and wellness activities to our community,” said Rosemarie Poveromo, president, United Community Civic Association. “The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York City Department of Corrections have been part of the mix since the beginning too. We appreciate their continued support and all of the organizations that make the Community Health Fair a must attend event.”
The Queens Library, Pro Health Dental, and Health First also provide information and services to Health Fair participants.

The Pavilion also houses Mount Sinai Doctors, a large multi-specialty practice providing primary and specialty outpatient medical care in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, and virtually all medical and surgical specialties with physicians on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. A new outpatient Imaging center including a full range of state-of-the-art radiological testing rounds out the new Pavilion.
The hospital has an unwavering commitment to patient safety, high quality care and an outstanding patient experience. Mount Sinai Queens is singular in the borough to have received Magnet® designation for nursing excellence, and Primary Stroke Center designation by both The Joint Commission and the NYS Department of Health. It is one of only two hospitals in the Borough that is designated as Thrombectomy-capable for diagnosing and treating stroke. Epic, the hospital’s electronic medical record, allows instant access to critical patient information across all inpatient and outpatient departments enabling faster and more thorough treatment not only at Mount Sinai Queens but across most of the eight hospitals in the Mount Sinai Health System.
