With growing talk of legalizing marijuana in New York, Errol Louis discussed the medial effects of marijuana, especially on developing brains, with Yasmin Hurd, PhD, professor of psychiatry, neuroscience, pharmacology and systems therapeutics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, chair of Ward-Coleman Translational Neuroscience and director of the center for addictive disorders at the Mount Sinai Health System. “In a number of States that have legalized marijuana, they have seen that the number of opioid-related deaths has decreased as well as the number opioid prescriptions,” said Dr. Hurd. “Our research over time has shown us that, especially if you use for example animal models, you can see that there is a causal relationship between early marijuana, especially THC exposure, and adult behavioral vulnerability.”
