What many people don’t know is that two of the most harmful complications of diabetes are heart disease and stroke, both deadly conditions. “The heart has three functions; one is to pump blood, the second is to have a rhythm, and the third is it needs oxygen to have these two properties. The products of a high blood sugar affects these three properties,” said Valentin Fuster, MD, professor of medicine and cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, director of Mount Sinai Heart and physician in chief at the Mount Sinai Hospital. “You have to look at all the risk factors that lead to heart disease including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise and poor nutrition,” Dr. Fuster added.
