Dr. Alfred Iloreta: "Daily Checkup: The dry air of winter can bring on pesky nosebleeds"
Dr. Alfred Marc Iloreta is a surgeon who specializes in treating diseases of the nose, face, sinuses, and at the base of the brain. "When it's cold, the air can't hold as much moisture, and the dry cool air tends to suck the moisture out of surrounding surfaces-including skin and mucous membranes like the lining of the nose, mouth and eyes," says Iloreta. "Unlike our skin, mucous membranes are very moist, so when they become dry and lose moisture, the surface can crack, expose small blood vessels and lead to bleeding-hence the ubiquity of winter nosebleeds."
