ISMMS Alumnus Talks About Some Of The Less Obvious Medical Training He Received

Yale New Haven Hospital Neurology Resident H.K. Vincent Lau, MD Reflects On The Ways He Puts Some Of His ISMMS Training Into Practice At Difficult Times

When K.H. Vincent Lau, a 2014 graduate of the Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, now a first-year neurology resident at Yale – New Haven Hospital, was roused from a deep sleep in the call room to attend to a patient in distress, it set off a chain reaction that had him bouncing back and forth between emergencies, routine in-patient care, and a family’s fear and anxiety. He was trained to respond as a physician, but he was still grappling with the stark differences between class-room theory and on-the-ground practice.

In this article, he reflects on the many ways compassion for patients can ebb and flow within the most dedicated residents when there is so much to juggle in the middle of the night.
