Dr. Brad Tannen: "Bob Costas's Eye Trouble Temporary, Experts Say"
The persistent infection, known as conjunctivitis, that forced Bob Costas to break away from his Olympic broadcasting post Tuesday is caused by the same virus as the common cold, experts said.
But instead of latching on to the membranes in the nose or throat, conjunctivitis infects similar membranes in the eye. "The result is an inflammation of the clear covering of the white part of the eye and the lining of the underside of the eyelid," said Brad Tannen, MD, Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
