"Pregnant Women Advised to Eat More Fish" - Dr. Taraneh Shirazian and Dr. Rebecca Brightman

Taraneh Shirazian, MD, Director of Global Women's Health and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at The Mount Sinai Hospital, recently discussed the new government guidelines for fish consumption.

"There are a lot of great health benefits," said Dr. Shirazian. "Omega 3 is great for brain development in the developing baby. There are also other nutrients and proteins that are found in fish." New federal guidelines recommend 8 to 12 ounces a week for those women, but because of mercury levels, some fish are off limits. "The fish that they're recommending contain omega 3 fatty acids, which are very important for fetal brain development," said Rebecca Brightman, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
