Salvatore Cilmi, MD, Appointed New Residency Director in Medicine
Dr. Cilmi will oversee the comprehensive training of Mount Sinai’s Internal Medicine residents and develop new recruitment strategies.
Salvatore Cilmi, MD, was named as the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, effective October 15. Dr. Cilmi will oversee the comprehensive training of Mount Sinai's Internal Medicine residents as well as develop new strategies to recruit talented medical students.
Dr. Cilmi is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease and is joining the faculty of the Infectious Diseases Division. He has conducted laboratory research on the molecular pathogenesis of bacterial and parasitic infections.

He is an accomplished physician and dedicated educator who will reinvigorate our program with his enthusiasm and innovations," said Barbara Murphy, MD, Acting Chair of the Samuel F. Bronfman Department of Medicine. "I am confident that with Dr. Cilmi's input, Mount Sinai and the Department of Medicine will continue to attract the best and brightest physicians to our program."
As Program Director for one of the nation's top residency programs, Dr. Cilmi plans to expand the current curriculum to meet the needs of tomorrow's physicians and leaders in academic medicine. To do so, he will develop more robust tracks and broaden the programs in research, genetics and primary care. "As we mold the next generation of physicians, we must be sure to provide a comprehensive and thorough training program, "said Dr. Cilmi. "It is our job to create the best, most thoughtful and thought-provoking group of leaders we can."
Dr. Cilmi comes to Mount Sinai from Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was an Associate Program Director for the Department of Medicine. A graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Cilmi completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital where he was chosen to be chief resident. He also completed a clinical and research fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital.
