"City Docs Urge HPV Vaccine For Boys As Well As Girls"

A push for pre-teen boys to get the HPV vaccine has parents wondering if they really need to protect their young sons against a sexually transmitted virus linked to cervical cancer. New York doctors say the answer is yes — because human papillomavirus can also cause other cancers and the Gardasil vaccine works best before kids are exposed to the virus through sexual activity. “It’s important to get the vaccine message out to parents of preteens before they become sexually active because the HPV vaccine is about cancer prevention in both boys and girls,” said Dr. Marshall Posner, the director of the Head and Neck Oncology Center at The Mount Sinai Medical Center.
