Mount Sinai Toy Drive Benefits Children of Doe Fund Graduates

Employees at The Mount Sinai Medical Center contributed approximately 1,500 gifts through a holiday toy drive to benefit graduates of the Doe Fund, a New York City-based organization that helps men whose lives have been devastated by homelessness, incarceration, and substance abuse.

Employees at The Mount Sinai Medical Center contributed approximately 1,500 gifts through a holiday toy drive to benefit graduates of the Doe Fund, a New York City-based organization that helps men whose lives have been devastated by homelessness, incarceration, and substance abuse.  

The Mount Sinai Medical Center was named the Doe Fund’s 2011 corporate sponsor of the year for its support of the program and its efforts to hire Doe Fund graduates.  The holiday toy drive was jointly sponsored by The Mount Sinai Hospital, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).

"This was a tremendous effort by the Hospital, and it really demonstrates the heart and soul of the Mount Sinai family," said Jeff Cohen, Vice President of Labor Relations at Mount Sinai. "Many of the men in this program have young children, but limited financial resources. The donated toys helped the men provide for their children and make the holidays a special time for their families."

Doe Fund graduates receive shelter, job training, and counseling and work designed to help them build a new life as valuable members of society, and gain self-respect and the respect of others. The Mount Sinai Medical Center has successfully hired about a dozen Doe Fund graduates since 2009.

"Providing service excellence to patients, visitors and staff is our ultimate goal at Mount Sinai and we take an active vested interest in partnering with our surrounding community," said Darryl Wilkerson, Vice President of Support Services at Mount Sinai. "Working closely with the Doe Fund has been a rewarding experience for our hospital. "Healing comes in many ways, and giving people an opportunity to reach their goals, not just in health matters but in life, is an important part of our mission.  Mount Sinai employees took this mission to the next level by their overwhelming support of this drive."
