Jeffrey I. Mechanick, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, has been appointed to the Science Board of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN). Dr. Mechanick, a specialist in endocrinology and nutrition, will assist the Science Board with its expanded mission into nutrition.

The PCFSN engages, educates and empowers Americans to adopt healthy lifestyles that include regular physical activity and good nutrition. The Science Board was formed in 2003 to ensure that PCFSN’s messages and programs are scientifically sound. Dr. Mechanick is one of sixteen top researchers and academicians in the areas of fitness and nutrition who sits on the board.

“Obesity is a growing epidemic in this country, and we need to make a rigorous effort to educate the public about the importance of good nutrition and exercise to curb its prevalence,” said Dr. Mechanick. “I am honored to serve on the Council’s Science Board to achieve this vital goal.”

Dr. Mechanick has authored more than 175 scientific publications in endocrinology and nutrition, and co-edited The Complete Guide to Lifelong Nutrition, the recently published book from the American College of Endocrinology. He serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), and chairs the AACE Publication Committee. Dr. Mechanick is a past President of the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, who lectures nationally and internationally on nutrition. He continues to care for patients with diabetes and nutritional disorders, and trains physicians in endocrinology and nutrition.

After receiving his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1985, Dr. Mechanick completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, in 1988. He then returned to Mount Sinai to complete his fellowship training in Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition in 1990, where he remains today. He also runs a private practice in New York City.
